Iranian opposition leader, Maryam Rajavi, addresses a conference about human rights in the European Parliament

During a conference in the European parliament, the Friends of Free Iran Committee (FOFI) host a conference about Human Rights situation in Iran. In an statement which received the support of more than 100 MEPs, FOFI points out the dire human right situation in Iran, especially regarding the sitting president role in crimes against humanity and his undeniable role in 1988 massacre. “Women, as well as ethnic and religious minorities, continue to face entrenched discrimination as well as violence. Female political prisoners are subject to illegal and arbitrary detention, torture, unjust imprisonment and other cruel and inhuman treatment” the FOFI declares.
The sponsors of the statement call EU to adopt a firm policy on Iran and to make the respect for human rights and abolition of death penalty a precondition in its relations with the Iranian regime. Recognition of the 1988 massacre as a genocide and crime against humanity, bringing Iranian regime human rights violation dossier to the UN Security Council are other demands of the sponsors of the statement.

Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, was the key speaker of the conference. She urged MEPs to call on governments of Europe to condition their relations and negotiations with the clerical regime in Iran on ending the arrest of protesters and torture and executions in prisons. “On the eve of the World Human Rights Day, the people of Iran rose up in Isfahan to demand their rights. They make sacrifices and endure much suffering to give meaning to the words written in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” “Why does Europe not end impunity for Iran’s ruling murderers? Silence and inaction towards the terrible 1988 massacre amount to appeasement. MEPs must defend Europe’s dignity by standing for the human rights of the people of Iran.” She added.
