On October 10, 2024, coinciding with the International Day Against the Death Penalty, the Iranian community in Belgium, held a rally in Brussels. The event took place in front of the European Parliament at Place du Luxembourg, from 14:30 to 16:00. The rally aimed to raise awareness and urge European leaders to take a firm stand against the increasing rate of executions in Iran.
Key Objectives of the Rally:
Condemnation of Executions in Iran: The rally emphasized the need for the European Union (EU) and its member states to condemn the sharp rise in executions, particularly the execution of women and public hangings. The Iranian community called for urgent action to support the “No to Executions” campaign.
Designation of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organization: Another major demand was for the European Parliament to leverage its influence to push the EU Council to officially designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The IRGC is viewed as the main instrument of domestic repression and a promoter of terrorism abroad.
Holding Iranian Regime Accountable: The rally also sought justice for victims of Iran’s regime, urging the EU and its member states to hold Iranian officials accountable for crimes against humanity and genocide. This call echoed statements made by the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran’s human rights situation.
Context:
Since the appointment of Masoud Pezeshkian as president, the Iranian regime has executed over 225 individuals, including nine women and three public executions. The Iranian authorities are accused of using regional conflicts to distract attention from domestic repression, particularly targeting protesters and youth.
The event underscored the urgent need for international action and solidarity to halt the ongoing human rights violations in Iran.
Pierre Galand, a prominent figure in Belgian social activism and development cooperation, as well as a political figure associated with the Belgian Socialist Party. Known for founding several NGOs, including Oxfam Belgium, joined the rally and expressed his support of the rally and the cause of the Iranian opposition.
Several Belgian news agencies including RTL, RTBF, MSN and Belga News Agency reported this event.
